The USS Yancey AKA-93 reunion began when Dick Balt thought a reunion would be a good idea. Dick served as an Ensign and E Division Officer aboard the Yancey in 1962 and 1963. Dick took the steps to organize a reunion for anyone that served on the Yancey at any time. He contacted Military Locators & Reunion Services and the first reunion took place at the Norfolk Airport Hilton in Norfolk, Virginia in November 1995. There were 37 crew members and 27 guests in attendance including many that were aboard when the Yancey took part in Operation High Jump in 1947 and was deployed to Antarctica.
It was decided at this first reunion that the next reunion would be in San Francisco in 1997 and reunions would take place every other year. However at the business meeting in San Francisco a vote was taken to have a reunion yearly with the 1998 reunion taking place in Pensacola, Florida. The USS Yancey reunion has been held yearly since 1998.
