2018 USS Yancey Reunion Dallas
As always Thursday, after everyone registered and caught up with old friends in the hospitality rooms, the reunion officially kicked off with a buffet dinner. After which the partying continued back in the hospitality rooms.
After boarding the buses Friday morning we began with a riding tour of Fort Worth followed by a trip to the Fort Worth Stockyards for the longhorn cattle drive down Main Street. This is a daily event that lasts about 30 minutes. However unbeknownst to us, or the tour planners, this day included a once a year event, the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering. This included two cattle drives and a Chuck Wagon Parade and Camp. After the parade and watching the wagons set up camp we explored the stockyard area and had lunch. By the time we were returning to the bus we were able to walk through the wagon camp which was already set up and fire pits started. It is amazing how much they can put in those wagons. Several of us were lucky enough to be welcomed by one wagon group and even shared a shot of whiskey with them. It was a very enjoyable day. On the way back to the hotel we made a quick stop and tour of the Fort Worth Bureau of Printing and Engraving. Half of the Nation’s currency is printed at Fort Worth.
Saturday started with a Dallas city tour which included a walking tour of John F. Kennedy memorial at Dealey Plaza, the site of the Kennedy assignation. Afterwards we headed to the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The museum contained many videos and items from the Presidents time in office including 911.
Sunday morning it was back to Dallas and the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. The tour was self guided wearing headphones explaining events in the 60’s and the assassination. You could see the view from where Lee Harvey Oswald made the fatal shot. On a more uplifting note we next visited Historic Grapevine Texas to have lunch and brows through the various shops and wine tasting rooms. We then headed back to the hotel to prepare for the Memorial Banquet.
Once the individual/couples pictures were taken and the group pictures were completed Skip Sander began the evening by welcoming everyone. Next was the Memorial Service followed by a toast by Commander Ed Gaskill. Jimmy Cee led us in thanks and dinner was served. After dinner we were entertained by Legacy Road, an award winning Texas barbershop quartet. This officially ended the 2018 reunion with everyone looking forward to the 2019 reunion in Buffalo, New York.
